Welcome to
the National Broadcasting School

Thank you for visiting our website. We're pleased that you're thinking about a career in radio.

Radio is relatively easy to do – but difficult to do well. The NBS aims to be the premier radio trainer in the United Kingdom. We like to think we produce the best radio graduates in the country: the future of radio, if you like.

The NBS provides high quality training in radio presentation and radio news. The School is known and recognized throughout the UK radio industry. It is non-institutional in its attitude. Creativity and commitment are the priorities.

Here's why we think you choose to train at the National Broadcasting School:

  • Proven success
An impressive number of NBS graduates have found jobs in a wide variety of excellent broadcast organisations, including the BBC and commercial radio companies. Click NBS NEWS on the Home page to read some of our success stories.
  • Brilliant location
the School is in the city of Brighton on the south coast.
  • NBS graduates have loved it
Click NBS Grads Say on the Home page to read what they say.
  • Diplomas
Students receive an NBS graduation Diploma, useful for a CV.
  • BJTC
The School's radio news course is BJTC-accredited. BJTC is the kite-mark of broadcast journalism and essential for getting a good radio news job.
  • Awards
There are three awards awarded on each course. Each award is a useful addition to a CV.
  • Pick your course
The NBS courses take place three times a year – starting in October, January and May.
  • Short courses
NBS courses are only eleven weeks long – short and intensive.
  • No wasted time
You're fully occupied all day, every day. Our presentation and news courses are each eleven weeks long, Monday to Friday. They run simultaneously.
  • 24/7 access
The School is open 24/7 so that students can maximise their time.
  • The right training
We teach radio skills, not theory. It's extremely practical. Students spend most of their time working for the in-house, real-time radio station, Red FM.
  • The right courses
The NBS knows what employers want. We teach the skills and creativity employers need. See COURSES. Our training is geared to helping you get a job.
  • Small class size
The instructor-to-student ratio is small. We take a maximum of only eight students. So, supervision is close and constant.
  • Good instructors
Our instructors are successful radio people with huge experience. They're passionate about the medium, and they're committed to finding and encouraging new talent.
  • Getting a job
The School helps with the production of demo tapes, writes the CV of each student, and teaches interview techniques.
  • Work attachments
Post course, all NBS news students and some presentation students spend at least two weeks on a work attachment at a commercial station.
  • Easy accommodation
Brighton is a student city – temporary accommodation is plentiful.
  • Overseas students
In August each year, the NBS runs a special five-week general radio course for overseas students. See COURSES.
  • Value for money
Since our post-course appraisals began two years ago, every graduate has said that NBS courses are good for value for money.

We hope you find the information that you want on our website.
